Favoritism:
Favoritism is a phenomenon that has been existing since the time of the creation of man. It refers to favoring some persons over others with equal claims. It is a natural act of giving unfair priority to one over others. We see favoritism in every area of life, such as in homes, offices, schools, and in society.
In the family:
Favoritism is a prevalent occurrence within our households. Parents often show favoritism towards their youngest or oldest child, regardless of any mistakes they may make. Additionally, parents tend to favor the child who is obedient, punctual, honest, and kind-hearted. Unfortunately, this biased attitude can lead to feelings of inferiority among the other children. It can also result in a loss of self-esteem and self-confidence for these children. Ultimately, this favoritism can create conflicts and divisions within a family. Furthermore, extended family members can also favoritistically treat some members over others.
In the schools:
Regrettably, our educational institutions are often affected by bias and partiality. It is common for teachers to show favoritism towards students who demonstrate ideal behavior, are hardworking, punctual, and excel in their academic performance. This favoritism may extend to students who are related to the teacher or attend the same academy or tuition classes, leading to preferential treatment. Conversely, teachers may neglect students who struggle academically or show little progress in their learning.
In the society:
Favoritism is very common in the society. Social hierarchy is often determined by one’s socioeconomic status. Individuals who possess wealth, cars, large houses, and a lavish lifestyle are typically held in high regard by society. Conversely, those who are less fortunate often experience discrimination and social ostracism without justification.
In Politics:
The matter of fact is that government of Pakistan is indirectly chosen by country’s military. Military always support their favorite political parties or those politicians who will be useful and beneficial to them.
Impacts of Favoritism:
- Favoritism has directly negative impacts on morale and trust of people.
- It is dreadful for teamwork and overall performance of employees.
- It may cause a child to have anger, depression, loneliness, refusal to interact with others or behavioral changes.
- It can lead to decline in self-esteem and self-confident.
Islamic principles and teachings regarding Favoritism:
Islam is the religion of peace and mutual unity. It denies favoritism, nepotism, racism and all false discrimination and focuses on brotherhood, equality, unity and consensus. The standard of excellence in Islam is only piety. Once an old man came to Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and told him that: “I’ve gifted my youngest son a jackass”. Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) inquired him have you given jackass to all your  sons? He replied, “No”. Then Rasoolullah (P.B.U.H) said, “Either take the jackass back from that son or give the donkey to all the sons”.
