Culture and Society

Culture:

Culture is a collection of whole traits of a particular community such as festivals, language, beliefs, codes of manners, music, institutions, fashion, living standards that passes from one generation to another. It includes all the ways of life of Homo Sapiens. It generally circumscribes the social behavior, norms as well as the knowledge, arts, laws, habits and customs of the individuals in the group. Normally, it is also called “the way of life for an entire society”. It demonstrates the human intellectual achievements. Culture is dynamic. The culture revolutionized with the passage of time.

Society:

While Society is the aggregation of people living together in an ordered habitat. People of a particular society share the same culture. A society represents the people who have same beliefs, norms, customs and ideologies. Different scholars define society in different ways:

“It is system of relationships that exists among the individuals of the group”. (Prof. Wright)  “It is the largest group in which individual have relationship.” (A.W. Green)                     “It is web of social relationship, which is always changing”. (Maclver)

Importance of Culture in a society:

  • Culture depicts the mind set and the characters of a population. Every nation or group has its own distinctive culture. It is the lifeblood of a spirited society, helps us to find who we are and facilitates us to see what is going in the world through our eyes. It is a reflection of a society or a culture. The culture provides stability to people by creating the sense of security and preserved as it is the reason of unity among them. People that share a common culture have similar history, ideologies and norms, making them a strong unified society. A healthy culture is very nutritious for people. Culture has usually many beneficial factors to a community, plays a vital role in economic growth. It plays a vital role in reforming the society.
  • Culture helps shape a society by suggesting us what is good and bad, aesthetic and ugly, sought or avoided. It determines what we wear, how we wear, what we eat, how we speak, how to celebrate etc. When the people of a certain culture, try to go against their culture, they will be punished. For example, Islamic culture teaches us to respect our elders. If an old person or pregnant women stands near an individual who is sitting cheerfully and does not give his seat to that person, he may receive frowns or even scolding from other people. Similarly, robbery is strictly prohibited in Islam. If a person does robbery, he will be strictly punished by judiciary or society.
  • Culture is a source of happiness and togetherness, making equality and equity among the people. For instance, in Islam, every year, Muslims celebrate two culturally festivals i.e., Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. These festivals are the living example of care, love, unity and meeting. People of a healthy society always care about others and helps others. All in all, culture is essential for living and directly influence the society in positive ways.
