X-Press Pearl Incident might become Worst Ecological Disaster in the History of Sri-Lanka
The X-Press Pearl sinking might become an inevitable environmental disaster. The chemical-laden vessel caught fire on the 20th of May 2021 Thursday. It wasn’t long enough since the newly X-Press pearl begin sailing to the destination. However, the vessel caught fire and suffered damage beyond repair. The navy of Sri Lanka and India worked together to put out the fire. But, rough sea and monsoon winds have thwarted efforts. The fire continues to engulf the ship until the 27th of May. Xpress feeders are known as the largest feeder operators in the world. The container ship pearl was 186 meters long and reportedly carrying 1486 containers.

Experts consider the X-Press Pearl as the worst ecological catastrophe in Sri Lanka. Salvers are trying to tow away the vessel into the deep sea to minimize marine pollution. The rear area of the ship is drifting, making the job challenging. The vessel has tons of chemicals including nitric acid and other chemical goods. If the ship sinks into the bottom, it will destroy the bottom of the sea, says the expert. The sinking of the vessel will have irreversible effects.

The leak of hazardous chemical substances is going to remain in the sea. The coastal stretch near the city is vulnerable to adverse effects.
Although there are certain measures already in place to minimize the damage effects. Many fishermen and the wet market as a whole will suffer a dramatic blow. The cause of the fire is believed to be nitric acid. Nitric acid is highly corrosive and used in the making of fertilizers and explosives. The operators also confirm that the crew was aware of the nitric acid leak. Reportedly, India and Qatar didn’t allow the vessel to stay in their water.
Whereas, Sri-Lanka allowed the ship to board its sea. This has also resulted in a public uproar blaming Sri-Lankan authorities.
