Noun is a part of speech which is used to identifies persons, places and things. In simple words, the name of a person, place or a thing is termed as noun. For example, John, Watson, London, Dubai, table and spoon, etc.
Types of Nouns:
There are different types of nouns which are given below:
1) Common Nouns: Â
Common Noun is a noun which refers to common persons, places and things. It always begins with small alphabetical letters. Spoon, country, city, boy, girl and chair etc. are some examples of common nouns.
2) Proper Nouns:
The name of a specific person, place or a thing is called proper noun. It begins with a capital letter. For example, New York, Williamson, Bible, Quran, Islamabad, etc.
3) Collective Nouns:
Collective nouns refer to groups of something in particular e.g., herd, class, team, army, choir, colony and crew etc. They behave like singular nouns and take singular auxiliary verbs. (The today class is off.)
4) Countable Nouns:
These are the nouns which can be counted and indicated by numbers. They have also their plural forms. For example, doors, boys, chairs etc.
5) Uncountable Nouns:
These are the nouns which cannot be counted and have not plural forms. All abstract nouns are uncountable nouns but all uncountable nouns are not abstract nouns. Air, water, rice, gold, knowledge and advice etc. are some examples of uncountable nouns.
6) Abstract Nouns:
These nouns refer to feelings, ideas, conditions and concepts. For example, advice, good, happy, success and information etc.
7) Concrete Nouns:
These are the names of physical things which can be sensed: seen, smelled, touched, tasted, heard. For example, practice, building, tree, etc.
8) Compound Nouns:
These nouns comprise of two different words (nouns) which behave as a single unit. For example: living room, cat food, high school, ice cream, etc.
9) Possessive Nouns:
These nouns are followed by apostrophe (’) and ‘s’ to show possession and ownership. For example, the father’s house, dog’s tail etc.
10) Gerunds:
When verb+ing behaves like a noun, it is called gerund. For instance, swimming, jogging, running, interesting etc.
