Digestive System Problems

Digestive System:

The Digestive System of human comprises of gastrointestinal tract (GIT)/alimentary canal and accessory digestive structures. The GIT includes Oral Cavity, Pharynx, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine and Large Intestine. On the other hand, teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gall bladder and pancreas. The GIT is about 9m/30 ft long.

Sometimes, our digestive system doesn’t work properly or we eat bad food, which can cause health issues like diseases.

Some Common Disorders of Digestive System:

Here are the following common disorders of Digestive System:

1. Constipation:

It is a very common problem of digestive system. It is a condition in which a person may have dry and hard bowel movements. In this condition, affected person pass faeces fewer than three times a week.                                                                                  Symptoms: It is characterized by dry and hard stool, painful and infrequent bowel movements, bloating, abdominal pain/cramps, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, discomfort, sluggishness, fatigue and fever.                                                                                      Causes: Here are the following factors which can cause constipation: Low fiber food, sedentary lifestyle, dehydration, stress, pharmaceutical drugs, pregnancy, etc.                    Treatment: Water, Fiber supplements, Exercise, Stool softeners, Enema.

2. Diarrhea:

Diarrhea is also a very common problem which lasts about 1-2 days. If a person is suffering from diarrhea for more than two days, then he should visit a doctor. Diarrhea means loose and watery stool.                                                                                      Symptoms: Symptoms of diarrhea include belly pain, urgent need to go to the bathroom, loose stool, dehydration, upset stomach, swelling and fever.                                               Causes: Diarrhea is caused by bacterial infection, virus, parasite, faeces-contaminated water, more consumption of water and food intolerance.                                             Treatment: Bland food, Avoid Soft Drinks and heavy foods, Rest.

3. Ulcer:

Ulcer means the sores on the lining of alimentary canal (stomach, small intestine, esophagus).  They can form both inside or outside of the lining.                                Symptoms: The signs of ulcer are development of hole, spilling of contents into abdominal cavity, bloating, belching, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, discomfort, feeling too full, etc.                                                                                                                              Causes: Excess gastric HCl secretion, a bacteria Helicobacter Pylori, NSAIDs, drinking too mush alcohol, stress and smoking can cause ulcer.                                                            Treatment: Antacid, Milk, Antibiotics.

4. Pyrosis:

It is also known as Heartburn. Actually, it is a painful sensation of burning in chest and throat associated with back flush of acidic chyme into esophagus.                                Symptoms: It is characterized by pain in the chest region.                                                Causes: It is caused when the lower spintcher of esophagus does not work properly. Moreover, Over-eating, eating fatty food, smoking, caffeine, lying down immediately after meal and alcohol consumption etc. can also cause pyrosis.                                                Treatment: Avoid eating spicy food, Exercise, Basic medicines.

5. Food Poisoning:

It is an illness which caused by eating or drinking contaminated food with toxins, bacteria, virus andparasites.                                                                                                    Symptoms: It is characterized by abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, dizziness, headache and fever.                                                                                        Causes: Clostridium botulinum, Salmonella spp, Compylobactoer spp.                                Treatment: Use ORS, Loperamide, Maintain good hygiene.
