Vigil Organizer Chow Hang Tung Arrested from Hong Kong

Hong Kong Police arrests Chow Hang Tung on her 32nd anniversary of the 1989 crackdown. Pro-democracy activist Ms. Chow is the chairwoman of Hong Kong Alliance. The Vigil organizer sets vigils for victims of Beijing’s deadly crackdown on protestors. The anniversary is set every year in memory of the victims. The ban for anniversary come into effect following Coronavirus restrictions. Thousands of people gather and mark the anniversary. However, police had instructions to stop any such event from happening. The is also only place where people gather is in Hong Kong or Macau in China. This is where people gather and commemorate their loved ones.

Vigil Organizer

Thousands of officers are on duty to standby and stop any event. Victoria Park is not open amid the anniversary of 1989 Protestors.  Also, the authorities didn’t allow the vigil for a consecutive second year. The authorities cite the decision as “Violation of Local Criminal Law”. However, the Vigil organizer calls people to commemorate their loved ones in different ways. Ms. Chow’s arrest came after the day she urged people to commemorate in their own ways. Also, the activist had an interview with BBC a day before her arrest. She said, that she’s ready to face the inevitable.

Many criticize the move of Honk Kong authorities. However, the People holding peaceful pro-democracy protests raises questions. This is how living in Hong Kong is, says Ms. Chow. The arrest of Ms. Chow is put as “Promoting and Announcing Unauthorized Assembly”. The results of the protestors are categorically the death penalty. There was also severe criticism internationally on troops for open firing on protestors in Beijing.
