Indian Premier League (IPL)

IPL stands for Indian Premium League (Cricket). The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a T20 cricket competition that takes place every year in India from March to May. After the international popularity of cricket, BCCI (Board of control of cricket for India) decided to launch cricket at national level. Thus, IPL was founded by BCCI in 2008 and contested by ten city-based franchise-teams.

The IPL is the most famous and popular cricket league in the world. In 2014, it placed sixth in average attendance among all sports leagues. The first sporting event that aired live on YouTube for the first time is IPL.

IPL always plays important and valuable contribution in the economic growth of the country for instance, in 2015, according to BCCI, the IPL contributed 140M $ to the GDP of the economy of India. In 2023, the league sold its media rights to Viacom 18 and Star Sports for the period of four years for 6.4 billion$. Other Indian sports leagues were established on the basis of the success of IPL. Following this trend, other Asian and non-Asian countries also introduced its cricket leagues e.g., PSL, ILT etc. Even the leagues are being held on the provincial levels too e.g., SPL.

Records in IPL

The most successful team in IPL is Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Each team won wonderfully the title of champion of IPL tournaments for five times. On the other hand, Viral Kohli made most runs (7263) in the history of IPL and Yuzvendra Chahal gained most wickets (187). Every year, before the premier of IPL, the auction between players takes place. In this way, each team selects its own player either from national team or international teams.

Pakistan Players in IPL

In 2008, the IPL granted permission for Pakistani players to participate in the tournament. Shoaib Akhter, Younis Khan, Salman Butt, Sohail Tanvir, Kmran Akmal, and Muhammad Hafeez participated in the IPL 2008. However, a mutual political dispute between Pakistan and India resulted in players from both countries being barred from participating in each other’s events.

Wish that these two countries one day would forget their mutual differences and political disputes and give their players the freedom to participate in each other’s games.
