Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa requested the US to put pressure on the IMF for an early loan. According to foreign media, the Chief had a telephone conversation with the US Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman. In which he said that the White House and the Treasury Department pressured the IMF to urgently provide $1.2 billion to Pakistan.
In the conversation, the White House was urged to expedite the process of a $1.2 billion loan from the IMF. On July 13, 2022, a staff level agreement was reache between Pakistan and the IMF, after which one billion aid was provided by the IMF.
The $200 million tranche was not release. Under the agreement, the program will be expande to another billion dollars. Apart from this, the IMF will also announce an extension of the loan program till July 2023.
Apart from this, the assets of government. There are also concerns over constitutional amendments related to IMF accountability.
Finance Minister Miftah Ismail. While talking to Jews News said that nothing more can be said at this time than that the agreement with the IMF will be concluded soon.
