Petition Against the NAB Amendments

Former prime minister and PTI chairman Imran Khan approached Pakistan’s Supreme Court in June 2022 to challenge amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance.

His petition asked the court to declare the amendments unconstitutional and argued that they affected fundamental rights and weakened accountability provisions. The Federation of Pakistan and the National Accountability Bureau were named as respondents.

Supreme Court Proceedings

The Supreme Court registrar initially raised objections to the petition. In July 2022, Justice Ijazul Ahsan set those objections aside and directed that the matter be placed before a regular bench for consideration.

A three-member bench subsequently heard the challenge and asked counsel to identify which amendments were alleged to conflict with the Constitution and fundamental rights.

Political Claims Require Attribution

Khan argued that the changes would benefit influential accused persons and affect corruption cases involving public office-holders. These were claims advanced by the petitioner as part of his legal and political challenge; they should not be treated as independent findings that particular individuals committed corruption.

The case became part of a wider debate over Pakistan’s accountability framework, parliamentary authority and the scope of judicial review.
