Homemade face masks can be an occasional part of a gentle skincare routine, but simple ingredients are not guaranteed treatments for acne, pigmentation or other skin conditions.

Start with skin safety

Natural does not automatically mean irritation-free. Patch-test a small amount, avoid any ingredient that has caused a previous reaction, and stop if burning, swelling or persistent redness develops. Do not apply mixtures to broken skin or close to the eyes. Persistent acne or a painful rash deserves professional advice rather than repeated home experiments.

Five simple approaches

Plain oatmeal mixed with water can form a mild wash-off mask. Unsweetened yogurt may feel cooling for some people. Mashed banana offers a soft texture, while cucumber can be used for a brief refreshing application. A small amount of plain honey is another common wash-off option. Use one simple mixture at a time so that any irritation is easier to identify.

Keep expectations realistic

A mask may leave skin feeling temporarily softer or more comfortable, but it cannot promise clear or glowing skin. Gentle cleansing, moisturizer and daily sun protection are more dependable foundations.
