Bandaranaike is famous as the first woman prime minister of a government in the contemporary world. After her husband was slain by a Buddhist monk while serving as Prime Minister the previous year, she entered politics. Although, Bandaranaike took over the leadership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party after his death, and she served as President of the country from 1960 to 1965 and again from 1970 to 1977.
