Human Brain: Hemispheres

Hemispheres:

The human brain is a marvel of complexity, with its intricate structures and specialized regions facilitating a wide array of cognitive functions. In short, Brain is the control center of living body (Kingdom Animalia) that controls emotions and activities of an organism. Human brain can be divided into Fore-brain, Mid-brain, Hind-brain. The largest part of Fore-brain is cerebrum. Actually, it is the largest part of brain indeed. Cerebrum is divided into halves called cerebral hemispheres (human brain hemispheres). The left hemisphere is also known as left brain and right hemisphere is known as right brain.

Note: The left cerebral hemisphere controls the right side of the body, and the right cerebral hemisphere controls the left side of the body.

Functions of Right Hemisphere:

  • The right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for non-verbal and creative functions. It is often referred to as the “non-dominant” hemisphere, as it controls the left side of the body. The right hemisphere is involved in tasks such as spatial awareness, facial recognition, visual imagery, and music perception.
  • Spatial awareness and visual imagery are crucial functions of the right hemisphere. It allows individuals to perceive and navigate the physical world, recognize faces, and interpret visual information. This hemisphere also plays a significant role in creativity, as it is associated with artistic abilities, imagination, and holistic thinking.
  • Moreover, the right hemisphere is involved in emotional processing and empathy. It helps individuals understand and interpret emotions, both in themselves and others. This hemisphere contributes to social cognition, empathy, and the ability to recognize and respond to emotional cues.

Functions of Left Hemisphere:

  • The left hemisphere is primarily responsible for language processing, logical reasoning, and analytical thinking. It is often referred to as the “dominant” hemisphere in most individuals. As it controls the right side of the body and is associated with verbal and mathematical abilities.
  • In terms of language processing, the left hemisphere houses the Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area, which are crucial for speech production and comprehension, respectively. It enables individuals to understand and produce spoken and written language, as well as engage in tasks such as reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Additionally, the left hemisphere is involved in logical reasoning and analytical thinking. It excels in tasks that require sequential processing, problem-solving, and mathematical calculations. This hemisphere is associated with skills such as critical thinking, numerical analysis, and deductive reasoning.

Interconnection between these parts:

While the left and right hemispheres have distinct functions, it is important to note that they work together in a highly interconnected manner. The brain’s hemispheres communicate through a dense network of neural connections called the corpus callosum, allowing for integration and coordination of various cognitive processes. This interplay between the hemispheres enables humans to engage in complex tasks that require a combination of logical reasoning, creativity, language processing, and emotional understanding.
