Cryptocurrency
The legal status of cryptocurrencies creates implications for their use in daily transactions and trading. In June 2019, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommended that wire transfers of cryptocurrencies should be subject to the requirements of its Travel Rule, which requires AML compliance https://petreewebdesign.com/.
An initial coin offering (ICO) is a controversial means of raising funds for a new cryptocurrency venture. An ICO may be used by startups with the intention of avoiding regulation. However, securities regulators in many jurisdictions, including in the U.S. and Canada, have indicated that if a coin or token is an “investment contract” (e.g., under the Howey test, i.e., an investment of money with a reasonable expectation of profit based significantly on the entrepreneurial or managerial efforts of others), it is a security and is subject to securities regulation. In an ICO campaign, a percentage of the cryptocurrency (usually in the form of “tokens”) is sold to early backers of the project in exchange for legal tender or other cryptocurrencies, often bitcoin or Ether.
Before June 2021, China was the primary location for bitcoin mining. However, due to concerns over power usage and other factors, China forced out bitcoin operations, at least temporarily. As a result, the United States promptly emerged as the top global leader in the industry. An example of a gross amount of electronic waste associated with bitcoin mining operations in the US is a facility that located in Dalton, Georgia which is consuming nearly the same amount of electricity as the combined power usage of 97,000 households in its vicinity. Another example is that Riot Platforms operates a bitcoin mining facility in Rockdale, Texas, which consumes approximately as much electricity as the nearby 300,000 households. This makes it the most energy-intensive bitcoin mining operation in the United States.
While securities are in place, that does not mean cryptocurrencies are un-hackable. Several high-dollar hacks have cost cryptocurrency start-ups heavily. Hackers hit Coincheck to the tune of $534 million and BitGrail for $195 million, making them two of the biggest cryptocurrency hacks of 2018.
In comparison, for example, the average transaction speed for Bitcoin is at least 10 minutes. Now compare that with Solana, a crypto platform that uses the proof-of-stake mechanism, which averages around 3,000 transactions per second (TPS), making it much faster than the sluggish Bitcoin blockchain.

Since Nakamoto’s first Bitcoin block, thousands of developers have introduced improvements to Bitcoin’s code. And over the past decade, Bitcoin has risen in popularity as a digital asset class, with more people, companies, and even countries accepting its usage or maintaining Bitcoin funds in their balance sheets.
Nakamoto created the first Bitcoin on January 3, 2009. Bitcoin was initially mined among tech enthusiasts until the first trading markets for Bitcoin emerged in July 2010, with prices then ranging from US$0.0008 and $0.08. By then, Nakamoto transferred Bitcoin’s network alert key and control of the code repository to Gavin Andresen, who became lead developer at the Bitcoin Foundation.
The Lightning Network uses smart contracts to set up connections between users off the main Bitcoin blockchain, and makes transactions between them using these channels. Users can then close these channels at any time and settle their final balances on the main BTC chain.

The Pi Network app is about as straightforward as it gets. It has a lightning button that you tap to mine Pi. This also starts a 24-hour countdown, and, when it ends, you need to check in and tap the button again to continue mining. You don’t need to leave the app open to mine, so all it takes is opening the app and tapping the button every 24 hours.
Since its open mainnet launch back in February 2025, Pi Network has built a strong community of over 60 million users. However, it’s also faced a fair share of challenges. The project has struggled with low liquidity, weak transaction activity, and the lack of smart contract features — which are crucial for building decentralized apps on any blockchain.
Pi Network follows a one-account-per-person policy through its Know Your Customer (KYC) solution. This system combines machine automation and human verification to authenticate user identities while preserving privacy. The KYC process emphasizes real individuals, combats fraudulent activities and enables fair participation in the mining process of the network. Pi’s identity verification approach balances scalability, security, and accessibility, allowing millions of users worldwide to validate their accounts while maintaining regulatory compliance.
